Update on Uganda’s Pig Farming Initiative

December 2024

We are excited to share the latest developments from our ongoing CSR project in Uganda, a collaboration between Genus, PIC®, Vetline, and AbacusBio, aimed at improving the local pig farming industry.

Key Developments

  • Service Packaging: Vetline has successfully packaged services encompassing insemination, health monitoring, and birth tracking, enhancing support for local farmers.
  • Insemination Milestone: The initiative has achieved a significant milestone with 1,555 inseminations completed across 819 farms in 43 districts.
  • Weight Tracking: We have recorded 1,485 weight entries, tracking the growth of pigs from birth to slaughter age. This data is crucial as we work towards understanding the performance differences between the progeny of PIC boars and local boars.
  • Empowering Farmers: Our program continues to empower local farmers, with 34% of participants being female and 66% male.

Looking Ahead

We are actively building our weight data and expect to soon provide insights into how PIC boar progeny perform compared to local alternatives. Additionally, Vetline is making progress in generating data on older and heavier pigs, with more results anticipated in the coming weeks.

Progress Towards Commercial Viability

Vetline is on a promising path toward commercial viability, enabling us to offer sustainable solutions that will not only benefit local communities but also enhance food security in Uganda.

This project exemplifies our commitment to empowering communities and improving agricultural practices for a more sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this transformative journey!
